PROFILE of PROFESSOR OLATEJU SOMORIN
Professor Teju SOMORIN FCNA, M.TAX, MPA, FCIPA, DFIPFM, DEIFD, MIoD,
HCIBN, ACIarb (UK), (D.Litt.) & PhD Taxation& Fiscal Policy
Teju’s immeasurable contributions and impact to the Nigerian Tax System, following her 34
years of service at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) (1976-2010) and post retirement
to date, remains exceptional. In all, she has 46 years experience in Taxation. Whilst at FIRS,
Somorin took part in tax reforms and enforcement activities.
She was the FIRS Board Secretary for 15 years, Secretary to the 1991 Study Group on Tax
Reform, and the Value Added Tax (VAT) Technical Committee, heading the team that produced
the six Reports which recommended the introduction of VAT in Nigeria. She has participated
virtually in all amendments to the Nigerian Tax Laws, and contributed to the emergence of the
National Tax Policy document.
Prof Olateju Somorin, popularly known as “TEJUTAX” has singly- authored 157
publications in taxation, including her well -sought -after TEJUTAX Reference Books on
the Nigerian tax system, in 2490 pages, similar to tax encyclopedia.
A recipient of the 2015 All African Students Union Leadership Award as “Africa’s Most
Outstanding Tax Administrator.”, (2016)
She has 48 other awards, in taxation.
Teju was one of the three winners of the Commonwealth Association of Tax
Administrators’ (CATA)Essay Competition. (1989).
Teju has scored some firsts.
She is the first female Professor of Taxation in Nigeria.

Somorin, the second female President has contributed to the growth of the Chartered Institute of
Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) before emerging as its 12 th President, a former member of the CITN
Tax Academy Board. From September 2017 to September 2019, Teju was the Co- Chairman
Technical Committee on ACCA/CITN Collaboration.
Teju has been a member of the FIRS Board, the Joint Tax Board and the Association of
Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN).
In 2018, Teju was appointed as one of the eight Fiscal Commissioners and eventually became a
Co-Chair of the Fiscal Policy Roundtable of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group(NESG) in
2019. She led the Research Group of the NESG in 2018 to produce 180 paged Report, on
the Expanded Review of the Nigerian Tax System. In same year, she was appointed a
Council member of European Institute of Financial Directors, a position she held till December
2020. Likewise in 2018, till 2020, she was the External Advisor to Amsterdam-based Centre for
Studies in African Taxation (CSAT)an arm of International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation.
Somorin has been involved in capacity building to FIRS, KWIRS, Joint Tax Board, Public
Service Institute and professional bodies such as the Association of National Accountants of
Nigeria (ANAN) and CITN. She regularly speaks as a moderator or discussant on public
platforms. Teju is an excellent organizer and a talented manager of events.
